Elko Water Quality Background

The water in Elko New Market is hard and also contains Iron and Manganese. The hardness can increase soap consumption and leave soap scum in the tub. Iron and manganese can affect taste and cause staining of fixtures and laundry. Iron is often referred to as “rust”. Manganese can cause black, gummy stains in fixtures.

Water softeners are very effective at reducing hardness, but cannot do much for iron and manganese which require filtration. The City Council has been planning for a water treatment plant that would reduce the iron and manganese; however, the costs for this type of plant are high for a smaller City.

The EPA has established two standards for additional contaminants in tap water:

MCL: Maximum Contaminant Level - The maximum allowable level of a certain contaminant
MCLG: Maximum Contaminant Level GOAL - The level where studies have found ZERO HEALTH RISKS, aka the "Health Limit"

Certain contaminants that absorb easily through your skin have been highlighted in orange. For those items, a Point of Entry (POE) system is recommended to treat all the water for your home/business.
