Prior Lake Water Quality Background

The City of Prior Lake currently operates five wells and plans to add a sixth well in 2010 to meet the demands of The City’s growing population.

Four of the existing wells are between 345 and 372 feet deep and tap into the Jordan aquifer, while the fifth draws from the Franconia-Ironton-Galesville (FIG) aquifer which is 630 feet below ground. The city's water supply system is capable of producing well over 8 million gallons per day.

Periodic brown colored water is common in Prior Lake water, and is caused by a higher than normal level of manganese. Manganese will cause brown stains in dishes, clothing, tubs, fixtures, and appliances. The city does offer a free cleaning agent to help remove these stains.

The EPA has established two standards for additional contaminants in tap water:

MCL: Maximum Contaminant Level - The maximum allowable level of a certain contaminant
MCLG: Maximum Contaminant Level GOAL - The level where studies have found ZERO HEALTH RISKS, aka the "Health Limit"

Certain contaminants that absorb easily through your skin have been highlighted in orange. For those items, a Point of Entry (POE) system is recommended to treat all the water for your home/business.
